battle

Every day, the battle -
it started in Seattle,
carried over to Redding,
the place to which I moved.
But certain things would fly
up North which wouldn't here -
my cocksure arrogance
replaced with Southern fear.

The suicidal chill,
the Northern politesse
don't work in California -
it's sunny brutalness.
(Trained to be an actor,
I never was a fighter.)
So I humbled up,
took a break inside,
had to detox wrath,
and show a little meekness.

I won't externalize
what I could show up there.
'Electro-shocked' down here,
I shuffle when I walk,
give money to the poor,
say "yes sir," and "yes ma'am."
I'm glad to be alive.
I'm glad to fight this battle
but leave out all the folks,
at least, as best I can.
It ain't there fault I'm plagued
by demons in my life.
